December 7, 2011

It’s with great sadness we announce the passing of Chief James L. "Jimmy" Carter. Chief Carter was the first Fire Chief of the Seminole Trail VFD and served in that capacity for 10 years. He was the man who set the foundation that made Seminole Trail Volunteer Fire Department what it is today. It was his steady demeanor that enabled STVFD to overcome many obstacles in our early years. He will be sorely missed.

RIP Chief

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Peggy Carter during this trying time.

Below is a copy of his Obituary

James Lewis Carter, 81, of Charlottesville, died on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at the Martha Jefferson Hospital, after an extended illness. He was born on December 11, 1929, in Alexandria, and was the son of the late James Lewis Carter Jr. and Viola Richards Carter.

He was preceded in death by his two sisters and their husbands, Shirley and Owen Joseph Keenan and Nancy and William Frame; and his brother and his wife, Clifford and Ann Carter. Also a nephew, Owen J. Keenan "Chippy"; and a niece, Donna Keenan Nelson.

Mr. Carter is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Peggy Darnell Carter of Charlottesville; his sister-in-laws, Elma Padgett of Fredericksburg, Evelyn Goforth of Richmond, and Linda Darnell of Rochelle; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ray and Agnes Darnell of Spotsylvania. He was the first chief, a charter member, and a life member of Seminole Trail Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Rochelle.

The family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to the many who faithfully visited and cared for Jimmy through his illnesses. We are also very grateful for the loving care he received at The Laurels during the last two years. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2011, at Bethel United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Henry Daniel Aylor and the Reverend Jim Lacy officiating.
