RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE FIRE

Units from Hollymead Fire/Rescue and Seminole Trail were dispatched to Robin Lane, in the Hollymead subdivision, for a reported chimney fire with fire on top of the chimney. Per dispatch protocol, only E121 and E82 were due, however a crew was available for Tower 88 and they responded as well. On arrival there was fire and heavy smoke issuing from the top of a wood frame (with metal liner) chimney of a two story split level home. E121 quickly laddered the roof and took an attack line up to extinguish the top of the chimney. TO88 arrived and positioned so the bucket crew could assist E121 on the roof. E82 stood by at a nearby hydrant.
As overhaul began it was very obvious the fire was much more significant than it appeared. As the chimney was opened up, heavy fire and smoke rolled out then fire pushed out from the space around the fire box in the fireplace. Fire also extended from the chimney into the attic space which was now charged with smoke. A structure fire box was filled adding E81 and E41 to the call. The roof crew vented the roof and E82 extinguished the fire in the attic space. Damage was contained to just a small portion of the attic, however the entire chimney structure and firebox were removed from the home. Significant charring to the structural members of the chimney and home were found from top to bottom.
