2 Alarm Structure Fire on Sumter Court

Units on scene: TO88, E84, E2(CFD), E1(CFD), E61, E41, SQ135, E111, District 8, Duty 1

On March 13th at 0812 hours STVFD was dispatched for a structure fire at 922 Sumter Court in the Abbington Crossing Apartment Complex. TO 88 was very close by returning from another call and arrived just 2 1/2 minutes after dispatch reporting a two story apartment building with smoke and fire showing from side Alpha 2nd floor. They immediately followed up with a request for a 2nd alarm. E84 arrived just minutes later and connected to a nearby hydrant. A 2" attack line was pulled for the initial interior attack, however units were driven back out due to extreme heat and smoke in the second floor apartment. As interior units backed out a quick knockdown was achieved by flowing water in the second floor window making the area tenable for an interior attack. On the second attempt at the interior attack knockdown was achieved and the fire was placed under control about 30 minutes into the incident. One FF was slightly injured partially falling through the floor in the fire apartment(see pictures). The entire 2nd floor apartment was destroyed by the fire and both the attic and first floor apartment were damaged as well. All units remained on scene for 3-4 hours due to the extensive overhaul needed.

Many thanks go out to the assisting agencies: Charlottesville Fire , Albemarle County Fire, Stony Point Fire, Earlysville Fire, Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue, and East Rivanna Fire.
